RAPPORT: An interpersonal relationship characterized by a spirit of cooperation, confidence and harmony; usually between therapist and patient. A minimum of DEFENSIVENESS. Usually essential for the patient to make progress in PSYCHOTHERAPY or
COUNSELING.
RATIONALIZATION: An ego protection MECHANISM. A person imagines a more acceptable purpose for why he does one thing than the real purpose (MOTIVE). Day by day life abounds with examples of RATIONALIZATION. A familiar kind is “bitter grapes.” In response to the fable, the fox saved face by claiming the grapes were bitter as an alternative of admitting that he could not reach them. An opposite kind is “candy lemon.” A person who was swindled typically convinces himself that he acquired a good deal.
REACTION FORMATION: A MENTAL MECHANISM wherein an individual exhibits (and consciously believes he possesses) the alternative emotions from these he has on the UNCONSCIOUS level. REGRESSION: Reversion to earlier habits patterns, as to escape from an unpleasant situation. Bodily sickness, pleasure, fatigue and intoxication might trigger various levels of temporary REGRESSION. More severe and lasting REGRESSION is usually present in extreme psychological illness. Dick, for instance, an ADOLESCENT boy, grew to become frightened by the challenge of younger manhood — relationship, competition with different boys, decisions, responsibilities. Unable to go on towards maturity, he turned again on the street of life to more childish ways of behaving. These were familiar to him; he had used them before. accept the kid, yet they could harbor UNCONSCIOUS resent
ment against the small intruder. They might attempt to make up for
their lack of affection with toys and gifts. They might “overprotect”
the child. But their REJECTION can be sensed by the child.
